There have been several reports recently, stating that Apple is developing a scaled-down variant of the iPad. A 7.85-inch iPad mini prototype with identical 1024 x 768 resolutions like the iPad 1 and iPad 2 is supposedly being tested in Apple’s Cupertino labs. The resolution and 7.85-inch form factor comes to approximately 163 pixels/ inch, implying a net increase in sharpness against the older versions of the iPad without the requiring apps to be redeveloped for the decreased screen size. App developers must be rejoicing.

In case these rumors become true then it is safe to expect another device to be launched between the upcoming iPhone 5 and the recently launched New iPad. Since the iPad was initially criticized for being simply a large iPhone without calling facility, the new, smaller iPad may be given calling facility like the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7. This could in the future result in phablets for all the Apple users, similar to the Samsung Galaxy Note.

Thanks to the tremendous success of the gigantic Samsung Galaxy Note, the market will probably be filled with many more new phone/tablet hybrids this year, one of them being the ASUS Padfone. However, the real question is that in the case that Apple does launch a 7.85-inch iPad Mini “phablet”, will the iPhone 5, sporting a massive display of 5-inches according to rumors, be as popular as its predecessors?
